Man of Steel: Zack Snyder to direct new ‘Superman’ film

Superman meets '300'?

Not long ago we found out Christopher Nolan, the new crown prince of superhero movies, was taking over producer duties on a new Superman movie, and was writing a script with Batman Begins scribe David S. Goyer. Names were swirling about directors attached, but Deadline.com just confirmed they’ve locked one down, and Zack Snyder, the man behind Watchmen and 300 (and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole??!!), will take over duties on next film. No word yet on whether it will be a complete reboot, or a follow-up to Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, or if Brandon Routh will even return to don the cape, but solid work has been put into the story, so expect that Snyder will be bombarded with these and many more questions in the coming weeks.

But can Snyder pull it off? We’ve already seen 300 and Watchmen, and his next film, Sucker Punch, seems to be a sexy steampunk fantasy, but they’re all pretty dark and gritty. Will a Superman film in the Nolan-style of ultra-realism work? And does Superman’s squeaky clean image even still resonate with audiences who’ve been trained to root for the antihero? It’ll be interesting to see how much dirt and grime they can smear on the Man of Steel’s classic red and blue. Watch this space for more…

I agree that Superman is kinda lame in this world of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman,’ but you have to agree that the producers (Nolan being one of them) made the right choice by picking Snyder as director, because maybe they agree that a new Superman movie might need more of an edge than what we’ve been getting (dating back to Superman III). It’ll be tough to make Superman into an anti-hero like Batman, but the movie itself can still have some bite by delving into the pure-evil of a General Zod villain, and maybe, just maybe, pull off something today’s audiences can relate to.
