‘The Hangover 2’: Mel Gibson’s Comeback?

Mel Gibson in The Hangover 2

New York Post’s Page Six is reporting Mel Gibson will appear in next year’s The Hangover 2.  Gibson, who has faced a string of bad publicity over the years, will cameo as a tattoo artist in the film which is set to follow the boys to Bangkok, Thailand.

Gibson is in desperate need of a BIG hit, or a light hearted cameo, to help gloss over the events that led to the nation getting first-hand accounts of his domestic problems, and getting dropped by the William Morris agency. And taking a cue from another accused spousal abuser, Gibson follows Mike Tyson’s cameo in the first Hangover movie, which briefly revived interest in the former boxer and ear-biter, and was met with audience applause. However, one can’t help but see straight through this thin attempt to polish the wacky persona that has been Gibson’s M.O. since he started his drunken, anti-Semitic rants in 2006.

Undoubtedly it will be funny.  Surely there will be a few lines that will be quoted to death.  But, it seems a sad last grasp at staying relevant.  A fading star’s last gasp to diminish the hurt he’s already done to his brand.  One thing is for sure, the news of Gibson’s cameo is making The Hangover 2 a hot topic seven months before it’s even scheduled to come out.  But, in the meantime, since he will be playing a tattoo artist, we can now start taking bets on what sort of ill-advised tattoo Ed Helms will get…
