In Theaters This Weekend: ‘Saw’ goes third-dimensional just in time for Halloween

29 Oct

One big movie is opening up, and just in time for the Halloween season – Saw 3D is hitting theaters this Friday, and as the seventh film in seven years, promises to be the last in the series. Fitting they’d go out with a bang and amp it up by filming in 3D, and you’d better believe the newest torture devices will take advantage of the new technology, but after making a movie a year for the past seven years, don’t be surprised if the filmmakers rely more on 3D wows rather than coming up with an original plot or dialogue. Sure to provide a couple good thrills, but expect that the real torture victims just might be the people in the audience.

Opening in limited release, and our Will It Suck pick of the week, is the Swedish sensation The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, the third installment of the movie adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s popular Millenium Trilogy. The films are being remade for American audiences starting with next year’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher, and starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, but the foreign version has garnered rave reviews, and a cult following. Best bet is to rent the previous two films, and then go see the third.

And, depending on where you live, you can almost certainly find a local theater offering a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. We suggest you deck yourself out in your best Dr. Frankenfurter garter belt, and do the ‘Time Warp’ all over again.
