Johnny Depp Joins Vampire Craze: Reteams with Tim Burton for ‘Dark Shadows’ remake

7 Nov

Depp-Burton - Will It Suck?Hollywood has always been crawling with bloodsuckers, but the ‘vampire movie’ craze is hitting fever pitch, and it’s time to add some BIG names to that list. After years of trying to work it out, is reporting that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have finally come together on a remake of ‘Dark Shadows’, the 1960’s gothic daytime soap opera that centered around the life of debonair vampire Barnabas Collins. The film marks the eighth collaboration between the actor and director, and has snagged writer Seth Grahame-Smith, author of the popular literary re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and the historical fantasy, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Shooting is slated for April.

Now, to see Depp, after years of wanting, finally getting the chance to play the dashing Collins is good news for everyone. And I don’t need to tell you the macabre is Burton’s bread and butter. But Seth Grahame-Smith is new to the world of Depp-Burton collaborations, and he hasn’t been attached to any major projects that have debuted yet (unless, of course, you count MTV’s dick-joke comedy ‘The Hard Times of RJ Berger’). However, let’s not forget that Grahame-Smith basically reignited the historical fiction genre with his take on Jane Austen’s best known novel, and combined with Depp and Burton’s own flair for quirkiness, just might turn out to be a match made in heaven. And let’s not forget, Depp and Burton already have vampire experience…

You bet it will! Since for bohemian Tim Burton there’s no more room in modern cinema for masculinity, his anti real man penchant for turning all his lead stars into wimps, wussies or effeminate geeks shall continue. Rumor has it that the new age millennial dreck version of Barnabas Collins will be featured as an “aged little boy” or pussified manchild, no doubt
meriting for the sad, sorry remake an off the scale suck rating on the WillItSuck? meter.

Burton has only made two good films in his career, Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood. If and when he is ever able to get beyond the stale tired practice of making all of his male leads into campy she males, he will be able to make a good film and not lampoon himself. Until then he will keep repeating himself as a leader in the sissy cinema of the anti-masculine. Zzzz. Yawn.
